The Cisco 4000 Series ISR

with Verizon Wireless LTE Advanced

When you need “always on” branch services, please consider the 4000 Series ISR!

Ideal for small, medium and large branches, the 4000 Series delivers critical branch network services, industry-leading security, and multiple levels of redundancy, including Verizon LTE Advanced, for “always on” business continuity.

The ISR 4000 Series utilizes Verizon’s Wireless Private Network services including the new split data routing service. When data is split, private data is sent over the private network, and public traffic over the Internet. This separation can drastically reduce your network services costs, and will increase performance for Internet and public cloud applications.

And, the ISR 4000 Series delivers industry-leading secure SD WAN capabilities, including a connector to rapidly deploy Verizon’s DNS Safeguard, based on Cisco Umbrella, providing cloud-based threat prevention for malware and ransomware.

The 4000 Series ISR Difference

To help your evaluation, we offer this framework: Performance, Security & Support.

Fueled by Cisco IOS-XE for up to 2Gbps performance with Advanced Network Services enabled, the 4000 Series provides industry-leading network, security, compute, and storage services to help you meet every day network challenges, and extend new hybrid WAN architectures and cloud services across remote sites.

In addition to industry leading functionality (tech specs found here), the 4000 Series offers a new Verizon Wireless 4G LTE Advanced Module, Application Centric Services, and programmability to maximize utility and deployment flexibility.

Enhanced Redundancy w. 4G LTE Advanced NIM

Do you need enhanced business continuity?

Business continuity and increased resiliency are standard in the ISR 4k. Here are a few examples:

  • Resilient multi-core CPU architecture using separate control and data services planes.
  • Dual integrated power supplies (4451 and 4431 ISRs), and optional power supply for additional PoE power.
  • Modular interfaces with online removal and insertion (OIR) for module upgrades without network disruption.
  • Modular network interfaces for load-balancing and diverse connection options (T1/E1, T3/E3, Serial, xDSL, Gigabit and Ten-Gigabit Ethernet) for network resiliency.
  • For more information on features and capabilities of the ISR 4k family, please review the data sheet here.

Adding to the line of modular Network Interface Modules (NIM) and diverse connection options, the 4000 Series can now be equipped with the Verizon Wireless LTE Advanced NIM to help improve business continuity.

More information on 4000 Series ISR interfaces and modules can be found here, and more information on the Verizon Wireless LTE Advanced services can be found here.

Plug and Play provisioning and ease of Management

Is your network in transition?

To address challenges of rapidly updating, or creating a network, Cisco provides Plug and Play Connect. PnP Connect automates the process of installing or upgrading software images, and installing configuration files on Cisco IoS XE devices. It reduces manual tasks required to scale the network capacity. Learn more about PnP Connect.

To support ease of deployment and management of Cisco ISRs, Cisco introduces DNA™ Center.  Cisco DNA Center is a complete software based network automation and assurance solution and is the dashboard for control and management of Cisco’s intent-based networking system: Cisco DNA. Cisco DNA Center addresses the demands of digitization, cloud, IoT, and mobility by eliminating IT complexity and protecting against cybersecurity threats, while allowing an IT organization to align the network with business intent by unifying policy, automation, and assurance with integrated security. Learn more about DNA Center.

Bolstering DNA Center, Embedded Event Manager (EEM) is a unique subsystem within Cisco IOS Software that allows customers to respond to real-time events, automate tasks, create customized commands, and take local automated action based on conditions detected by the Cisco IOS Software.

Custom programs or scripts, referred to as EEM policies, can be programmed using a simple Command-Line-Interface (CLI)-based interface or using a scripting language called Tool Command Language (Tcl).

Save a truck roll and create customize applications at any time. Use text messaging as a method to retrieve ISR LTE interface status, radio signal strength/quality, GPS coordinates (geographical location), and ping results. Or use your browser to view the location of any of the ISRs in your network.

Several scripts already exist to support ease of provisioning, and platform and mobile management via SMS. Examples of existing scripts can be found in Cisco ISR Best Practices for Verizon Wireless LTE, also known as The Guide.

Additionally, more information on EEM, including additional scripts and an ecosystem of partners who can help you create additional scripts can be found here.

Simple Out of Band Management

Superior management capabilities such as Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) support for 3G MIB with 4G MIB and Out of Band Management further 1000 Series deployment and management ease.

Leading Out of Band management capabilities yield lower cost and higher performance via:

  • Faster device image downloads
  • Faster log/debugging uploads and
  • Stronger Security with OOB over Verizon Wireless Mobile Private Network (MPN).

For more on powerful Out of Band capabilities, please download The Guide.

Widely deployed in the world’s most demanding and secure networks, Cisco ISRs provide customer proven branch and retail network security.

And, the 4000 series ISR delivers enterprise class security including high-performance encryption, VPN, firewall, URL filtering and support for Verizon Wireless Private Network service with Private Network traffic management.

Fueled by next-generation IOS-XE, the 4000 Series ISRs offer branch threat defense including perimeter control protection, intrusion prevention, web security, and malware protection, and the widest range of public and private network VPN services.  ISR branch security services include:

Cisco ISRs also include leading physical router security including:

  • The secure boot feature performs hardware-based authentication of the bootloader software to prevent malicious or unintended software from booting on the system.
  • Code signing verifies digital signatures of executables prior to loading to prevent the execution of altered or corrupted code.
  • Hardware authentication protects against hardware counterfeiting by using an onboard tamper-proof silicon, including field-replaceable modules. If authentication fails, the module is not allowed to boot.

And, if you need the ease and support of managed private network security service over the 4G connection the ISR  4000 series is fully integrated with the Verizon Wireless Private Network serviceThe 4000 Series supports Verizon DMNR (dynamic mobile network routing) service using NeMo protocol (IPv4-based Network Mobility). The 4000 series also supports PMIPv6 protocol, and Multi-VRF with Cisco DMVPN (dynamic multipoint VPN), which is compatible with Verizon Private Network.

Additionally, Cisco ISRs are the first routers to support Verizon’s new Private Network Traffic Management (PNTM). PNTM is an enhancement for the 4G LTE Private Network that provides you with a premium and differentiated network experience through Quality of Service (QoS) capabilities using standards-based IP packet marking.

More details on Cisco ISR integration with Verizon Wireless Private Network can be found here.

The robust security options offered by the ISR 4000 series yield flexibility, high availability, and application security, with the ability to deliver differentiated services for multiple departments and organizations.
